Strings are a very important part of the sound of your instrument, and there are many different types and brands.  The following brouchure was provided by D'Addario.  They give a great overview of string types and the way that those strings affect the sound of your instrument.  There are obviously many other great brands out there, but I've had great results with the D'Addarios on various instruments and situations.  Beware as you think about upgrading strings, there are many very cheap "strings" out there on the internet that are made with poor materials, made very thin and brittle, and will corrode, break, or just plain sound shrill and awful no matter how much your technique improves.  I know that a good set of strings is expensive, but they are well worth the investment.
